What is Kennel Cough?

Kennel Cough is a contagious airborne virus in dogs. It spreads much like a cold does in humans, and can be contagious even if symptoms are not present. Symptoms may include dry or wet cough, nasal discharge, lethargy and fever. Because Kennel

Cough is a virus, there is no cure, and–much like a cold in humans–requires rest and time for recovery. Your vet may prescribe certain medications to make your dog more comfortable during recovery and may also prescribe an antibiotic as a

preventative measure against a secondary infection.

What is Canine influenza?

Canine influenza (also known as dog flu) is a contagious respiratory disease in dogs caused by specific Type A influenza viruses known to infect dogs. Symptoms are virtually the same as Kennel Cough and may include dry or wet cough, nasal

discharge, lethargy and fever. Dogs can also be asymptomatic while carrying the virus and still spread the disease. Your vet may prescribe certain medications to make your dog more comfortable during recovery and may also prescribe antibiotics as a

preventative measure against a secondary infection.

If my dog is vaccinated for kennel cough and/or canine influenza, does that mean that my dog won’t get sick?

Vaccination against kennel cough and canine influenza may prevent the occurrence of either of these illnesses in your dog, however much like a flu shot for humans–they do not completely rule out the possibility of your dog contracting either one.

Vaccination against both are still very important however, as the duration and severity of kennel cough and canine influenza may be greatly reduced if your dog has been previously vaccinated.

What does Stay do to prevent guests from contracting kennel cough and canine influenza?

Our facility is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected daily. The Bordetella vaccination is required for all of our services, and the canine influenza vaccination is strongly recommended. Any dog that is suspected of having–or is showing symptoms of kennel

cough or canine influenza is immediately quarantined. Since both illnesses are highly contagious airborne viruses, unfortunately we cannot completely eliminate the risk of infection.
